LETTERS TO MY UNBORN SON - READ THE ALCHEMIST

Manlighet/ManlinessPosted by Maziyar Khallagi 23 Jan, 2012 13:47

I have been in contact with several successful people in my life and most of them recommended me to read the bestseller book "The Alchemist". Subtitled "A fable about following your dreams" this is a story about Santiago, an andalusian shepherd boy who dreams of a certain treasure in far off Egypy and sets off in search of it. During his travels, Santiago meets with people who assist him, sometimes consciously and sometimes unconsciously, with his quest. Eventually he meets an alchemist in the dessert who becomes his guru and opens his eyes to the true values in life, suffering and love. At the end of his journey, Santiago learns that the treasure he has been pursuing all this time is not at all what he first imagined but he realizes that his pilgrimage has had its own intrinsic value, irrespective of what he had found at the end. During his search for the treasure and travels he has become reconciled to his own self and learned to recognize his own purpose in life.

You can say that Santiago and his heart had finally become friends and neither was capable of betraying the other any longer!

LETTERS TO MY UNBORN SON - WHERE ARE YOU ARRIVING?

Manlighet/ManlinessPosted by Maziyar Khallagi 16 Jan, 2012 13:00

"Wherever you go, go with all your heart." - Confucius

Here is a great question to ask yourself. Ten years from now, you will surely arrive but the real question is WHERE? None of us would like to fool ourselves about where. We can not afford to kid ourselves about the paths we are walking. Remember that some people dream of success, while others wake up and work hard at it!

LETTERS TO MY UNBORN SON - THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD HEALTH

Manlighet/ManlinessPosted by Maziyar Khallagi 09 Jan, 2012 12:40

"To avoid sickness eat less; to prolong life worry less" - Chu Hui Weng

As the writer Charles Dickens said, "There is something in sickness that breaks down the pride of manhood." In my life I have come to the conclusion that nothing do people tend to take so much for granted as their bodies. Most of the people will abuse them or generally kick them around which stems from lack of the undertanding and appreciation of the delicate human body and soul. With harmful foods, overweight, smoking and drugs in such abundance and lately so accepted among us, the person seeking good health faces no easy task. I assure you that it takes a strong will to uphold and return to a healthy way of life, especially if several of these habits have already taken hold. In order to change our behaviour and take better care of ourselves, we must be sick and tired of being sick and tired.

The British prime minister, Benjamin Disraeli, once said, "The health of the people is really the foundation upon which all their happiness and all their powers as a state depend." This means your success in life depends on your health. Just because you are not sick does not mean you are healthy. As the Roman philosopher said, "Diseases of soul are more dangerous and more numerous than those of the body." By controlling the brain cells, we can turn loose a powerful force of assistance which not only helps which our day-to-day efforts, but immediately toward achieving relaxation to relieve stress and tension in your life. Relaxation itself can be achieved through various methods. A short study of these methods is essential to determine which one is best suited for you and which you will be most content to work with.

I strongly believe that each one of us is born with an individual spirit and an individual right to make choices. It is up to you to decide how you want to live your life. This means that you have actually three choices: you can ignore your stress problems, you can moan over them, or you can do something about them. It is your freedom to make that decision. The issue of responsibility and accepting it, is your decision. After all, he who has health has hope; and he who has hope has everything!

LETTERS TO MY UNBORN SON - BOOKS TO READ

Manlighet/ManlinessPosted by Maziyar Khallagi 19 Dec, 2011 10:00

My son, I have caught a cold today and will mostly rest today. However I wanted to recommend three books that will change your life. Remember, that the book you don´t read will not help you.

Roman emperors are remembered for many things but not usually for their philosophical insights. The exception was Marcus Aurelius whose thoughts have come down to us in the shape of his Meditations. These reflect the influence of the ancient philosophical tradition known as Stoicism and of the Greek philosopher Epictetus in particular. A Stoic believed that the wise man was indifferent to the external world. Virtue rather than health or wealth or power was the great good in life and the attainment of virtue was a matter of the individual will. A man could be virtuous when sick, virtuous when poor, virtuous even under the threat of death. What he needed to do was to cultivate the reason, to recognise the inevitable realities of the world and to turn his back to the destructive power of irrationality and the emotions.

The message of this book is that we forget what we think we know about reality. There is a different order of reality hidden behind the everyday world we usually inhabit and those with courage can reach it. A separate reality can be experienced only if we are prepared to rid ourselves of our egotism and self-important belief that we are at the centre of things. We are like horses with blinkers but our blinkers can be removed.

Joseph Campbell wrote in his seminal work: "There are of course differences between the numerous mythologies and religions of mankind, but this is a book about similarities; and once they are understood the differences will be found to be much less great than is popularly supposed."

LETTERS TO MY UNBORN SON - LAW AND GOVERNMENT

Manlighet/ManlinessPosted by Maziyar Khallagi 12 Dec, 2011 12:09

"Never do anything against conscience even if the state demands it." - Albert Einstein

Some say that law is the only game where the best players get to sit on the bench. I strongly believe that you should obey the law. As I grow older and learned from my experiences, I realized that the written law is one thing, the interpretation of the law, something else. This leads to several problems. One that concerns me is that the criminals know their rights better than their wrongs. I have seen many men use the law to do dishonest actions. And mostly it is a irony that one can not punish the wrongdoings of another person without committing a wrongdoing himself. All these leads that some people have low faith in the government and laws. I have seen many people in the business world shying away from presenting their cases to the higher courts within our civil-service structure. Just because they wish to avoid conflict. I do not think that we need to be afraid of the government. They are there to help us and will do so. After all they are elected and appointed by the people. That is you and me, my son!

I believe that laws are important. At the same time when I read history or even the daily news, I can see that men fight for freedom, then they begin to accumulate laws to take it away from themselves. This is a question of integrity and honesty. After all integrity has no need of rules.

LETTERS TO MY UNBORN SON - THE VALUE OF EXPERIENCE

Manlighet/ManlinessPosted by Maziyar Khallagi 05 Dec, 2011 10:22

"Learn all you can from the mistakes of others. You won´t have time to make them all yourself." - Alfred Sheinwold

Experience is what you get by not having it when you need it. The man who lacks experience and knows it must first make a promise to himself that he will not allow this missing factor to prevent him from trying to achive his goals and get the job done. Having done that, it is crucial for you to take the time to carefully evaluate each project you are about to undertake. I give you a four-step formula that helped me:

1) Ask yourself the following questions: What and how much data do I have immediately at hand? What and how much data is missing? Do I need to compile more? Once you have all the facts you can possibly get, you are ready to go the next step.

2) Let us start analyzing the data. I advise you to find a reliable person with whom you can check whether you have missed anything.

3) Now is the time to act on the information you have at hand. Here is where the experience factor really counts, since a proper interpretation of your data is crucial to your success. As years go by and you get older, you will make your share of mistakes in the world. Experience is what causes a person to make new mistakes instead of old ones.

4) Evaluate your information, action and the lesson learned from the experience. I have realized that almost 80% of my errors in my decisions are based on mistaken interpretation of the gathered information, not the lack of information itself.

I believe that experience will make you an outstanding executive. But remember that the trouble with using only experience as a guide is that the final exam often comes first and then the lesson. As you win some of your challenges, be cautious and set up your mind to keep on learning from your successes, so you can reapeat them. Remember to also learn from your failures, so you never make the same one twice. One of the secrets to success is reframe your mistakes as experience, learn from the and use them as a springboard to the next level.

LETTERS TO MY UNBORN SON - BEING ORGANIZED

Manlighet/ManlinessPosted by Maziyar Khallagi 28 Nov, 2011 12:40

"Information is a source of learning. But unless it is organized and available in a format of decision making, it is a burden and not a benefit." - Willian Pollard

During my business life, I have realized how important it is to work on a well organized desk. This is actually an ability that can be learned by anyone. The difficult part is breaking away from current habits of piling up paperwork and documents. However I have good news for you, you can clean up this mess in less than three hours by following these six simple steps:

1) Start by removing everything from your desk. EVERYTHING!

2) Clean your desk now by using a damp cloth. Do this for the entire desk.

3) Get yourself different boxes and label them depending on the office supplies you have. You may have a box for only pens, another one for letterheads etc.

4) Go through your papers and office supplies. I believe you will find some that you don´t need anymore. Keep a handy trash container to dispose these items.

5) Now is the time to organize your office supplies and all the apperwork in accordancce to how often they are used. Items being accessed frequently, need to be placed in a spot that is easily reachable. Maybe in your desk drawers or shelves close to your desk. Items that are only accessed once a week or month, can be placed further away.

6) Schedule one hour every friday afternoon for organizing your desk. It is important that you stick to your schedule. After all it´s for your own good.

Following these six steps creates a working desk that is both functional and neat. I know that I can work with a clear mind then.

LETTERS TO MY UNBORN SON - BEING A GOOD OBSERVER

Manlighet/ManlinessPosted by Maziyar Khallagi 21 Nov, 2011 11:46

"The three horrors of modern life - talk without meaning, desire without love, work without satisfaction." - Mignon McLaughlin

I had a chat with my mentor yesterday and he asked me some questions that opened my mind even more. We talked about my observation of the world and how I can be even better. I decided to use my letter today using the knowledge I received yesterday. I believe that there are some questions that we need to find the answers to on a daily basis. What is going on in your community? What new challenges are facing your neighborhood? Our government? Your business industry? Who are the personalities influencing the world/local opinion? Anyone new? Are there any recent breakthroughs that create opportunities for you?

I strongly believe that we all need to be better observers and evaluators of what is going on around us. After all every event can affect us in a way or another. It may leave an imprint on what we will be and how we live our lives. Life is not about getting through the day. It is more about getting from the day by observing and reflecting what is happening around us. For that you need flexibility and conciousness. So my advise is, be alert and awake to get the subtle messages life gives you. Some of the most extraordinary opportunities are hidden in meaningless events of life. If you are not a good observer, you may miss them.
