"The man who views the world at fifty the same as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life." - Muhammad Ali

Many people say that they want to improve their results but that is as far as it goes. Most of them talk about what they are going to do but I see no action. It is not difficult to see where they are in 10-15 years from now. Then there are those who are willing to take advantage of all this free information and invest some kind of effort in applying the knowledge. But in my experience, the people who excel and improve their results most are those who are willing to invest in themselves. After all most of us humans run away all the time to avoid coming face to face with ourselves.

Some of the successful people I know purchase good books and courses to improve their skills. They attend different workshops and seminars. They have decided to get the knowledge they are lacking and they don´t stop until they achieve it. I believe that to be successful you need to put an effort. Your first step should be realizing that the road may be tough. The roadblocks can be speed bumps. It all depends how you look at them. But rememebr that if you don´t get lost, there is a chance you may never be found. Make a commitment to invest yourself and take the next step to make it happen. An investment will be worthwile to your progress. If you are worried about going to the next level, don´t worry. You can worry about the same thing at the next level...Just go ahead and get there now!

"There are always three speeches, for every one you actually gave. The one you practiced, the one you gave and the one you wish you gave." - Dale Carnegie

How well you will perform as a public speaker is unknown but I believe you will have the three basic ingredients to succeed. 1) Your mouth 2) Your mind 3) Two feet to stand. I will now give you some simple tips how to use them to give better presentations.

How you send the words from your mouth is very important. Start practicing your articulation so you pronounce the words clearly enough for listeners to understand easily what you are saying. It is very important that you prepare you speech since practicing the actual delivery will take some time. I recommend that you start by reading your speech out loud for yourself. Maybe in front of the mirror. Then you can ask someone, maybe a friend, to listen and tell you which words are not coming across clear enough. This helps you to get your message out so people will understand what you are saying.

I have met some great public speakers and all of them are masters of the breathing technique. I want you to take a deep breath and present whole sentences or at least complete clauses of long sentences at one time. Never start a sentence half out of breath since you may run out of breath completely half way through a word which makes a awful presentation. And then we have the shaking knees and pounding heart and shaking hands. One easy way to control those things is to place both your hands firmly on either side of your desk. I have some more techniques that I can share with you. You will be amazed how physical support will help your presentation.

After a while you will realize that most of your nervousness will disappear after you make a couple of public speaches. For that to happen you need to have the confidence of knowing that you did your homework by preparing a good text and presentation and that you have something of value to share. After all the best way to sound like you know what you are talking about is to actually know what you are talking about!

"The man who does not read good books have no advantage over the man who can not read them" - Mark Twain.

Anyone that says we have only one life to live, have not found the value of reading a book. I know that many people feel that reading nonfiction books is work. I can not agree with that. For me reading nonfiction books is very relaxing. Plus, with so many things in this world to learn about, with so many different perspectives to see, I find it more fascinating to read nonfiction books. I almost find it a waste of my time to read somebody´s daydreams. When you read a book you are able to see in another person´s mind through a journey or achievement. You can see how different solutions are rationalized. It is as close you can get to the actual experience. Great books do that. They open our minds to wondering and thinking about why we are here, to trying to always do the best we can and to realize that anything less on our part is throwing away a large portion of energy that we have been given in this world.

Remember that almost all the decisions you have to make in your life, have already been made over and over again and most of them have been described in writing in some book. By having the patience to find the right books and read them, you will have an advantage compared to most people. I recommend you to read the books that improve you in some skill in life. Read history books since they are about people in different times and what challenges they experienced and how they overcame them. Read some books on topics such as human mind, stress, nutrition, exercise, financing, investing money and others that explain what people think and what they have done. Decide to read about a wide spectrum of topics if you want your skills in your life to improve infinitely. A good book on your shelf is a friend that turns it back on you but remains a friend!

This poem by Rudyard Kipling is a true inspirational poem about being a man:

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise.

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools.

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

"Leaders need to be optimists. Their vision is beyond the present." - Rudy Giuliani

In my life I have heard that leaders are often said to be born with the talent of leadership. I agree that many leaders are born with that but most of the leaders I have met have learned to become great leaders the same way one learns to become a doctor, a lawyer or an accountant. To be a good leader you need to lead by example, whether you intend to or not. Good leadership starts with great communication with the people. You need to develop a certain rapport with your people that caughts them up in your efforts. You can not call yourself a leader until your role is validated in the minds and hearts of your men.

Be bold in your priority settings, remember that a leader must dare to be ahead of his team members. After all that is what being a leader is all about. While you establish your future plans, bear in mind which team member is best suited to handle certain areas. You need to select strong and innovative people who can offer great ideas and methods on their own. In this way you can add them to your own ideas and implementation methods. If you are fortunate enough to find three or four key people who, with their experience can implement your ideas into action, then it will be very difficult for you to fail. These members will carry you through the toughest challenges.

As a leader you need to look back once in a while to make sure that your team members are following you. This means that it is very important that you have the energy and power to achieve your vision. Remember to always collect all the facts without prejudging the outcomes, before making a decision. Be tough but very fair with all proposals. Living with a lot of conviction and being flexible enough to change your decision in case new circumstances arise, are distinguishing features of a great leader.

I leave you with this qoute that I hope helps you as it has helped me:

"A great leader doesn´t create followers. He creates even more leaders."

"Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success." - Henry Ford.

In my last letter I explained my thoughts of entrepreneurship and how you can be successful. However, teamwork divides the task and multiplies the success. Teamwork pulls many years of experience and effort together and is one of the most effective ways of management. Being able to utilize your team members brainpower and experience, asking their opinion and advise and keeping them updated are key ingredients for success. After all a chain is as strong as its weakest link.

In my experience I have realized that one of the most effective ways to make another person proud of himself is to ask his opinion on a subject that he knows is of special importance to me. Remember this mindset since it makes one feel that his experience and judgement is appreciated. To be a good team member, never miss an opportunity to sincerely show how much you value your team members. If you move forward together, then the success takes care of itself. I remember when I used to play football. No matter how good I was during a single game, my team won only if the morale of the team was high and every single player gave his greatest effort. So remember, without teamwork it is virtually impossible to reach the heights you wish to reach. So be good at it!

"Always bear in mind that your own resolution to success is more important than any other one thing" - Abraham Lincoln

The word "entrepreneur" itself comes from the French word. entreprendre, which means "to undertake". I checked the Oxford Dictionary to find the definition of the word and it says: "a contractor acting as an intermediary between lanor and capital". There is a fine line between a successful businessman and a successful entrepreneur. You may think that they are somehow the same but the entrepreneurial personality conveys more gambling spirit, more speed and less adherence to the traditional and stereotyped roads of business. However both need to know what their customers want and what trends are currently occuring in their markets. To be a winner, they need constant contact with the marketplace and have an accurate understanding of what is going on. Remeber that some people dream of success while others wake up and work hard for it.

I believe that entrepreneurs are people with great imaginations. Some say that they have answers for everything. There are no problems that can not be solved. Entrepreneurs are creative thinkers, always seeking and finding new ways for doing things. They seem to have a inborn attitude for avoiding the ordinary. Their methods for finding new pathways in the business world is the main source if their success. The successful entrepreneur is a superthinker when it comes to analyzing the risk areas for a new project. If another qualified person can help minimizing the soft areas, he will employ them to narrow down the risk factors. He will also develop an alternative plan just in case the one he curently uses, does not work. Some people succeed because they are destined to while most people succeed because they are determined to.

Many of the ideas entrepreneurs successfully exploit are not their own. Almost every person in this world have at least one excellent idea but very few know how to merchandise them. For an entrepreneur, this is a natural ability. They like developing ideas so they can help the consumers. Being able to have a swift pace in this stage is very important for entrepreneurs, that is why most of them prefer working on their own. The most successful entrepreneurs judge their success by what they had to give up to get it!

"The language of friendship is not words but meanings" Henry David Thoreau

What is a "good friend"?, you may ask. How can I describe him? In my life I have had many friends and seen different friendships. In times of trouble many true friends will cry with you but very few can honestly feel and rejoice with you. If you ask me, what a good friend is, I tell you that he or she is one who can and will enjoy your sucesses without envying you. I advise you to look for a person of good character and strong moral fiber of humor, respect, courage and conviction. Treasure these kind of persons since they are few. So friendship is not a big thing, it is a million little things.

A common characteristic habit of strong people is to have "no friends not equal to your self", as the chinese philosopher Confucius said. For me this means that I only befriend people of equal or greater standards as compared to my own. For me it makes sense befriending people capable of influencing me towards becoming better and never less that what I am. I suggest you follow that road as well.

How can I make my friendship last?, you may ask. In my experience and one of my observations is that most of the good friends have similar tastes. They usually like and dislike the same things. They usually have the same personality traits, especially the important fundamental values such as honesty, loyalty, sincerity and dependability. To be liked and respected by someone you admire and respect will help filling up your confidence for it indicates that you in turn are being admired, respected and sought for companionship. Making friends and maintaining a good friendship involves reaching out, thoughtfulness and truely caring. Good friendship needs time. Important that you have phone call at least once a month and a lunch at least every two months. Do not allow to much time to pass between the contacts. Remember that good friendships need tending!
